NEWS:WEB4AFRICA ANNOUNCES WEST AFRICA'S FIRST MIRROR PROJECT

Foremost web hosting company, Web4Africa announces the launch of The Nigerian Mirror Project. This project is the first of its kind in the West African sub-region. The Nigerian Mirror Project is physically hosted in Nigeria with plans of making free and the open-source software readily available, and to help boost download speed.
Compared to most parts of the world, accessing bandwidth is really expensive in Nigeria. The major factor responsible for this is that most of the contents consumed by Nigerian Internet users are usually generated outside the country, making most bandwidth access international. In view of this, Web4Africa’s goal is to create a solution by bringing free and open-source content closer to end-users in Nigeria.
Another benefit of this project is low latency. Bringing the content closer to the user will result in enhanced user experience with faster downloads. Direct beneficiaries of this project include users of Linux Operating Systems and developers using open-source programming languages in Nigeria, provided their Internet Service Provider peers openly at the Internet Exchange Point of Nigeria (IXPN).

“This project, in addition to the immense benefits it brings to the Internet ecosystem in Nigeria, is one of our ways to give back to the local Internet community and is only a first step,” says Oluniyi Ajao, Managing Director of Web4Africa.
Presently, the mirror is hosting the full repositories of Ubuntu and CentOS (both on Linux Operating Systems), including Python Package Index in Nigeria. The project has gained official recognition from CentOS and Ubuntu as it has already been integrated into their official distribution network
